About 1-Hit Combo

Me!

Hi, I'm Andy, a lifelong fighting game enjoyer.

I've loved the genre since I was 9, when Street Fighter II: The World Warriors launched in 90s arcades and changed everything. That was 33 years ago, but it's only recently, after many false starts, that I decided it was my last chance to be a part of the fighting game community (FGC) and learn how to play the games I loved properly.

So, why the blog with the self-deprecating name? Well, there's lots of fighting game content out there, but the vast majority of it is guides, advice, and streams by high-level, professional players who kindly impart their wisdom to the rest of us.

Those videos and streams are invaluable to fighting game players of all skill levels, myself included, yet I always find it weird there's barely any content by those of us still in the trenches.

The fighting game learning journey is hard, and it's different for everyone. We join the path from different places; we all have our own struggles and challenges, and the speed at which we learn and improve varies from person to person. I believe it's helpful to know you're not alone in the struggle, and that there's as much to learn from those close to you as there is from the best.

Outside of news, there's also barely any writing on fighting games. Off the top of my head I can only think of Patrick Miller's Patreon and Steven Mane's Street Fighter theories blog. Writing is my profession, so the blog felt like the best fit.

And that's it, really. 1-Hit Combo exists as a place where to write about my experiences as an old man learning to play fighting games properly and the struggles associated with that. I'll offer advice where I think I have authority to give it. I'll talk about battling my introverted nature and finding my place in my local scene and the wider FGC. I'll write about the fighting games I love, old and new.
